Alternatives to typical grass are a great idea for any desert landscape. Traditional grass is thirsty and requires a great deal of maintenance. These three grasses are native to the Nevada area and can grow with relatively little care whatsoever. Enjoying grass is possible in the desert without excessive watering.
If you are interested in planting these grasses yourself, make sure that the ground is well tilled and that that roots are deep enough and that the soil is not over packed. Give the grass some room to breathe. Also, for better water absorption, you may consider having the slope of the landscape angling toward the plants so that the water rests on the patches of grass giving the grass more water, so that it stay as vibrant and green as possible.
The SNWA (Southern Nevada Water Authority) will also give you a rebate for landscaping your garden with drought resistant plants.
